KASEY BEST is a Marriage and Family Therapy pastoral counselor.  She received her Master’s degree in Counseling with an emphasis in marital and family therapy from the University of Phoenix.  She provides compassionate and confidential counseling to individuals, couples, and families struggling with relationship issues.  Kasey comes to CPC with much experience working with elementary school-aged children and adolescents.  She has spent a year working in conjunction with the YMCA to provide psycho-educational groups for children and adolescents, focusing on self-esteem, communication, and academics.  Additionally, she has spent time providing individual and group counseling to students in various elementary schools. Kasey enjoys working with families who are struggling with communication and discipline issues in the home.  She also enjoys working with individuals struggling with low self-esteem.  She has co-facilitated various groups in anger management and parenting skills.  Kasey is a current member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.  She has office time in Fairfax, Manassas and McLean and can be reached at extension 244.


SUZANNE C. DOHERTY, PhD is a clinical psychologist in the humanistic-transpersonal tradition who brings a holistic perspective to her work with individuals, families, and couples.  She is a certified play therapist and particularly enjoys working with children from ages three to twelve who struggle with issues related to family disruption, school problems, and stress in a complicated world.  She also believes in developing a collaborative relationship with parents to help meet children's psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs.  As a clinical psychologist, Suzanne is trained in psychological assessment and is able to provide a variety of testing services to those in need of psychological evaluation.  Suzanne teaches Psychology as an Adjunct Professor at Marymount University in Arlington. CAREY GAUZENS, LCSW, CP is a licensed clinical social worker, and is nationally certified in creative arts and experiential therapy.  Carey received her Masters degree in social work from Catholic University in Washington, DC in 1990 and has more than 20 years' experience in the counseling field.  Her work includes pastoral counseling, campus ministry, experiential therapy, grief and loss counseling, and several years of work in mental health, psychiatric, and crisis intervention settings.  Carey specialized in working with adult survivors of all types of abuse, especially sexual abuse survivors, and works extensively with individuals and families around issues of grief and loss and facing the end of life.  Carey works with individuals across the lifespan: from adolescents and young adults developing independence and forging their own identities in the world to senior adults facing aging issues and how to make the most of their post-retirement years.  She brings enthusiasm and humor to her work and a deep reverence for the human spirit and the spirit of God in us all.  Carey works with adults, adolescents, and seniors on issues of abuse, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, adjustment to life transitions, and family issues. Heather Guthrie-Hoey, MS, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage family therapist, serving individuals, couples, groups, families, and organizations for 10+ years. Providing therapeutic care throughout the United States and Germany to individuals aged from 3 to 93, led Heather to learn about the power of focusing on the strengths of people in a solution-focused, compassionate manner. Life enrichment and wellness with a respectful reverence to one’s personal philosophy is at the core of her work. Heather’s practical experience in community mental health, schools, families’ homes, grief and loss, drug addiction, military family life adjustment & crisis support, coupled with family reunification and recovery from trauma has offered her a fresh, up close perspective of human dynamics from all walks of life. She is also trained to address life transitions, intimacy issues, communication building, dual diagnosis treatment, and organizational mediation/team building. Whether individual growth, couples enrichment, family healing, or organizational support, be desired, Heather will provide a safe, confidential & growth-oriented environment. THE REVEREND KATHIE W. KURTZ, D.MIN., L.P.C. is an ordained minister in the Mennonite Church and has lived in Northern Virginia since 1983. She received a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Counseling from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and is a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Kathie is also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. She works with individuals, couples, families, and groups and deals with a wide variety of issues including women's issues, co-dependency, depression, grief and loss, spiritual growth, families dealing with aging members, and abuse, both physical and sexual. ELLEN MASON LUCE, LPC, LMFT is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Virginia. She works at the Falls Church and McLean centers. Ellen did her graduate work at Virginia Tech and received a degree there in Marriage and Family Therapy; she is a gifted teacher and therapist and works extensively in the use of visualization and imagery for healing, as well as all types of work with chronic and life threatening illnesses. Jessica S. MacNair, MA, NCC is a Board Certified Psychotherapist,
having received her Master's Degree in Counseling from Marymount
University. Jessica provides individual, group, couples and family
counseling in a safe, confidential & nurturing environment. She
utilizes a solutions-focused based approach to therapy, focusing on
client empowerment. Jessica specializes in areas of self-esteem
improvement, anxiety and eating disorders, substance abuse, addictions
of all kind, depression, grief and loss, sexuality, and has also
received training in various forms of intervention. Jessica
facilitates two weekly "Self-Esteem & Relationship Building" groups on
Monday and Tuesday evenings. Before joining the CPC community,
Jessica worked as a therapist at the Family Therapy Center in McLean,
Virginia. She is a member of the American Counseling Association and

THE REVEREND GARY L. McMICHAEL, LCSW, MDiv, is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a licensed clinical social worker. Gary is an innovative and energetic therapist with a warm personal style. His expertise includes working with couples to enhance their relationship as well as working with individuals and families. Gary is a graduate of Catholic University's School of Social Work and received a Post-Master's Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy at Virginia Tech. He has additional training with men's issues, grief and loss, depression, abuse and trauma issues, and spiritual growth. Prior to entering pastoral counseling, Gary worked in parish ministry and remains interested in congregational issues. THE REVEREND KEVIN L. OGLE, DMin. is a pastoral counselor and ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Kevin received his Masters in Divinity from the Vanderbilt Divinity School and completed his Doctorate of Divinity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Kevin works at our Clarendon and Falls Church centers. He specializes in work with marriage and family issues, grief work and comprehensive family therapy. Laurie Page, MA, LMHC, is a caring and dedicated counselor in the person-centered tradition.  She received her Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling. Her early training was predominantly with young children dealing with issues of attachment and abuse, and adolescents who were deemed “at risk” by the Juvenile Justice System.   She enjoys working with children, adolescents, and their families, with a number of issues such as behavior, depression, ADHD, family relational problems, and trauma.   Laurie’s experience also includes play therapy and sand tray therapy with children and adults of all ages, grief counseling, work with physical and sexual abuse survivors, and critical incident counseling.  She believes in the infinite capacity of the human spirit to heal, and in the supportive and nurturing potential of the family; both the family of birth, and the human family of which we are all a part.  Laurie has a positive and compassionate approach to her work, and a deep assurance that the spirit of God is the healer of all things and all people.  Laurie works at our Manassas and Fairfax offices, and can be reached on voice mail extension 259.


Anne B. Passin, MS, LPC is a pastoral psychotherapist, who values mindfulness and compassion in her practice. She received a Masters degree in pastoral counseling from Loyola College in Maryland, and she is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia. Anne works with individual adults facing a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, abuse, trauma, relationship difficulties, and spiritual questions. Anne has led a workshop series for Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families/Adult Children of Alcoholics. During her training she completed a hospice internship in grief counseling and has a particular interest in helping individuals dealing with grief and loss as well as death and dying. Anne approaches the human person and the therapeutic process from a body-mind-spirit perspective. She also serves individuals seeking a way to live with serious and chronic illness, including autoimmune disorders. Anne is an experienced yoga practitioner and teacher and is available for retreats. NANCY M. SCOTT, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker who received her M.S.W. degree from the University of Louisville in 1980. She has been a psychotherapist in Northern Virginia since 1986. Prior to that she worked in a variety of settings providing services to individuals and families, including foster care, adolescent group homes and a psychiatric hospital. Nancy specializes in working with severe depression and other mood disorders, survivors of suicide, marriages in crisis due to an affair, women's issues, families under stress because of mental illness and/or substance abuse, and parenting issues. She enjoys giving community presentations on a variety of topics. In addition to working with adults, Nancy also works with adolescents. THE REVEREND DOUGLAS M. THORPE, Ph.D. is a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and Chair of AAPC’s Atlantic Region.  He works with individuals, couples and families out of our Annandale and Downtown Washington, DC, Centers.  Doug is a Certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist.  He is active in training and education, both at CPC, where he co-leads the Residency in Pastoral Counseling, and at Marymount University and Wesley Theological Seminary, where he teaches pastoral counseling.  Doug grew up in America, Europe, and Central Africa.  He is especially attuned to issues of cross-cultural and racial identity.  Doug is ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church and served as a parish pastor before becoming a pastoral psychotherapist.  When he is not in the office, Doug can often be found on his bicycle, leading the “St. Peter’s Pedalers” on their rambles throughout the Greater Washington area.  Doug can be reached at voice mail extension 236.


THE REVEREND CHERYL ZANDT, MDiv, MSc is a kind and energetic clinical counselor who uses the cognitive behavioral models most recommended by the National Institute of Mental Health in her specialty of working with people who suffer from acute anxiety, stress, panic attacks, phobias, OCD, and depression.  She is a member of the United Methodist clergy and does extensive work with people in crises of faith and with clergy of any faith tradition seeking confidential support.  Cheryl  is also experienced in working with couples and doing premarital consultation.  Her approach to pastoral counseling is warm and engaging, honoring what is unique in every person.  Cheryl received her Master of Divinity with an emphasis in pastoral care and counseling from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and studied for a year with Hans Küng in the school of ecumenical theology in Tübingen, Germany.  She served for seven years as a hospital chaplain and is currently working toward a Ph.D. in pastoral counseling at Loyola College in Maryland.  Cheryl sees clients in Washington DC at Metro Center. JOHN S. CIPPARONE, MA is a psychotherapist and pastoral counselor who works with individuals, couples, and families concerning life issues associated with anxiety, depression, communications and spirituality, as well as teenage related challenges associated with defiance, impulsivity, self-esteem and co-occurring disorders. A veteran of 30 years with the armed forces who traveled internationally, he is sensitive to cultural diversity as he builds upon a trusting relationship with experiential and structural models in assisting individuals, couples and families meet their needs. Ellie Hsieh, MS, received her Master's degree in Marriage and Family
Therapy at Virginia Tech. She completed internships at the Center for Family Services of Virginia Tech and the Center for Multicultural Human Services located in Falls Church. Prior to entering the field of counseling, she received her Bachelor's degree in biology from Rutgers University in N.J. and worked as a high school science teacher for three years. Ellie has experience working with individuals, couples, and families on issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, substance abuse, cultural adjustment, social challenges, grief/loss, relationship/marital conflict, and life changes. She particularly enjoys working with adolescents and children using play therapy. Ellie uses a variety of therapy approaches to meet the specific needs of clients and believes that clients bring unique strengths and resources to the work in therapy that enable them to achieve their goals. Mata Mandir Khalsa, MS is a counselor of deep compassion and spirit. She works from the understanding that each person has a unique way of finding meaning in his or her life. Mata Mandir has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola College. Her experience as a hospital chaplain and Sikh minister has led her to work with people from many spiritual paths and diverse backgrounds for over 23 years. She is genuine, compassionate and insightful.  Mata Mandir has worked with individuals, couples, and groups, including those who experience depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, acute and chronic illness, bereavement and grief.  She works with life transitions, relationship issues, communication skills, and spiritual challenges.  Mata Mandir uses an eclectic approach in order to meet the specific needs of each client. She has training in mind-body experiential techniques as well, which can be integrated into the therapy sessions.  Counseling with Mata Mandir is a journey of healing and self-discovery. Susan Maguire, LGSW, MSW, MA sees her calling as helping people to live their most meaningful and fulfilled lives.  A clinical social worker who received her Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Catholic University, Susan approaches therapy from a perspective of wellness.  She supports her clients in looking honestly and compassionately at their lives to gain healing, tackle challenges, and move forward in positive ways.  She is experienced in working with individuals on life stage transitions, depression, anxiety/stress, work and career issues, women’s issues, and grief and loss.  Her clinical background includes roles in a community mental health center, foster care agency, hospital emergency department and domestic violence program.  Susan is also a trained career/life coach who has provided focused, brief coaching to clients for the past six years at an international agency in Washington (and is qualified to administer the Myers-Briggs-Myers Type Indicator.)  Before becoming a clinical social worker and coach, she worked for 15 years in television and public relations.  Susan is available for individual, couples and family counseling at offices in Washington, DC and in Alexandria. DAVINDER SINGH, MS, MA, Davinder received his Masters degree in counseling from Marymount University. Davinder works in a safe, confidential and nurturing environment with individuals, couples, families, and groups: from adolescents and young adults working to establish their own unique independent identities, to adults with adjustment to life transitions, and senior adults facing aging issues and how to make the most of their emotional and physical lives in their post-retirement years. Renae C. Smith, MA, is an experienced play therapist, lay counselor, and teacher, having received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin—Green Bay, and her Master’s Degree in Human Services Counseling from Regent University. Renae enjoys working with adults and children of all ages, with a range of issues including, childhood trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, and workplace and social challenges. In addition to working at CPC, Renae is also involved in many ministries at her home church and school, including serving as school counselor, directing and teaching the “Toddler Time” program, facilitating a people-helping training group, serving as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher, and playing in the band for contemporary worship services. Renae also enjoys spending part of her summers in Southeast Asia, lecturing and counseling with Global Mosaic International, Inc.
